I am a huge Jean Grainger fan and have read all of her books. I was thrilled when the sequel to The Star and the Shamrock was available. I bought The Emerald Horizon for my Kindle and didn't put it down until I had finished the book. It is a beautiful story about hope in the face of hopelessness; kindness in the face of hatred; the human desire to survive against all odds and primarily the strength of a mother's love. I have read a lot of books about WWII, both fiction and non-fiction, but none of them have transported me to the streets of a bombed city or the gut-wrenching fear of being a Jew in Germany under the Nazi regime. I could smell the dirt, the dust, the sour body odor of the characters while feeling the gnawing hunger they lived with. It is an amazing author who can walk us through a time in history and depict it so vividly without sounding like a documentary or a history book.I will read anything that Jean Grainger writes and can't give her work enough stars. Thank you Ms. Grainger for the beauty of your words. The Emerald Horizon: The Star and The Shamrock Book 2 is by Jean Grainger. Jean has surpassed herself in this book. Her writing is such that it is impossible to put the book down. Jean has managed to take the darkest point in our history to use as the background to a wonderful story of love and family. She used the idea that family doesn’t have to be by blood to create a book that grabs that idea and runs with it. During this time in history, normal families were torn asunder and people had to look for other ways to make a family. That comes across clearly in Jean’s book.Ariella was forced to make a horrible choice in The Star and the Shamrock when she placed her two small children on the Kindertransport to take them to England. She had taken a chance on writing to an unknown relative of her husband to ask if she would take care of her children for her. She knew nothing of Elizabeth; but it was a chance for them. However, in spite of her having sent the letter, she hadn’t heard from Elizabeth and just hoped her children would be met and taken care of. Meanwhile, she had to figure out how to survive. For some unknown reason, her postmistress and neighbor, Frau Braun had pulled her off the street into her attic and had been hiding her the last four years. This was in spite of her husband being a big wig in the local Nazi party and her son, Will, was fighting for the Germans. Frau Braun would not tell her why she had been hiding Arielle; but she was.Since all the news she heard was what came through Herr Braun, Arielle thought the war was turning in the Nazis favor. She just knew it had been four years since she had seen her children. Then her life really turns upside down when Frau Braun informs her that she must leave immediately. Where would she go and how would she live?This book is undoubtedly one of the finest fiction about the Holocaust that I have read. Jean doesn’t try to shock us with gory details or language; but just let’s us figure out between he lines if we should choose. Now the waiting begins for the next book by Jean Grainger.
